Coban(II) iodat có dạng tinh thể, màu sắc phụ thuộc vào mức độ ngậm nước của nó: màu chàm (dạng khan), màu dương sáng (ngậm 2 nước), màu đỏ nhạt (ngậm 3 nước), màu tím hồng (ngậm 4 nước), màu hồng (ngậm 5 nước), màu đỏ (ngậm 6 nước). Các hợp chất iốt hòa tan trong nước; tuy nhiên, các dung dịch giàu iodua đóng vai trò là chất hòa tan tốt hơn để tạo ra các dung dịch iodua.
Nhiệt phân KMnO4 để điều chế oxi trong phòng thí nghiệm theo phương trình hóa học sau: 2KMnO4 → K2MnO4 + MnO2 + O2 Dùng làm thuốc chữa bệnh cho cá. Được dùng trong Y học với tác dụng sát trùng.
