Crom(III) clorua là chất rắn kết tinh có tính ăn mòn cao, dạng khan là chất rắn màu tím, dạng phổ biến có màu xanh lam hoặc xanh lục đến đen. Nó được sử dụng làm chất xúc tác và tiền chất sản xuất thuốc nhuộm len. Crom(III) clorua tiêm, vô trùng, không gây dị ứng được sử dụng như một chất phụ gia cho các thuốc bổ sung dinh dưỡng.
Cromyl clorua có dạng chất lỏng bốc khói màu đỏ sẫm, có mùi hăng. Dễ hòa tan trong nước. Nó có thể ăn mòn mô. Cromyl clorua có thể được điều chế bằng phản ứng của kali cromat hoặc kali dicromat với hydro clorua khi có mặt axit sulfuric, sau đó là chưng cất. K2Cr2O7 + 6 HCl → 2 CrO2Cl2 + 2 KCl + 3 H2O Axit sunfuric đóng vai trò là chất khử nước. Nó cũng có thể được điều chế trực tiếp bằng cách cho crom trioxit tiếp xúc với khí hiđro clorua khan. CrO3 + 2 HCl ⇌ CrO2Cl2 + H2O
