Crom(II) clorua mô tả các hợp chất vô cơ có màu trắng khi tinh khiết, tuy nhiên trên thương mại thường có màu xám hoặc lục; hút ẩm và dễ hòa tan trong nước. Crom(II) clorua không có công dụng thương mại nhưng được sử dụng ở quy mô phòng thí nghiệm để tổng hợp các phức chất crom khác và là chất hấp thụ oxy.
Nó chủ yếu được sử dụng như một tiền chất của trimethylolethane (CH 3 C (CH 2 OH) 3 ) thông qua một phản ứng ngưng tụ với formaldehyd ; triol đây là một trung gian quan trọng trong việc sản xuất alkyd nhựa . Các ứng dụng khác bao gồm khử propanol và oxy hóa thành axit propionic. Ngưng tụ propionaldehyd với tert -butylamine tạo ra CH 3 CH 2 CH = N- t -Bu, một khối xây dựng ba carbon được sử dụng trong tổng hợp hữu cơ . Sự khử hóa của imine này với LDA tạo ra CH 3 CHLiCH = N- t -Bu, từ đó ngưng tụ với aldehyd .
