Axit propionic là một chất lỏng không màu, có mùi ôi khét. Tạo ra hơi khó chịu. Nó là một axit béo bão hòa mạch ngắn bao gồm etan gắn với cacbon của nhóm cacboxy, có vai trò như một loại thuốc chống nấm. Muối natri của axit propionic tồn tại dưới dạng tinh thể không màu, trong suốt hoặc bột kết tinh dạng hạt.
