Axit selenơ xuất hiện dưới dạng tinh thể rắn trong suốt, màu trắng. Được sử dụng như một chất phản ứng cho các ankaloit và như một chất oxy hóa và là đồng vị được sử dụng trong ghi nhãn thuốc phóng xạ. Cũng giống như các hợp chất của selen, axít selenơ có độc tính cao, uống phải axít này ở liều lượng ít có thể gây tử vong.
