Diclo heptoxit là chất lỏng không màu, thủy phân sẽ tạo thành axit pecloric Diclo heptoxit được sản xuất bằng cách chưng cất axit pecloric với sự có mặt của chất khử nước là photpho pentoxit: 2 HClO4 + P4O10 → Cl2O7 + H2P4O11 Ngoài ra, điclo heptoxit còn được điều chế bằng cách nhiệt phân axit pecloric: 2HClO4 → Cl2O7 + H2O
Dùng làm nguyên liệu để điều chế butađien, isobutilen, xăng tổng hợp,... Hỗn hợp B với propan được dùng rộng rãi làm nhiên liệu; là thành phần chủ yếu của khí dầu mỏ hoá lỏng LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas). Ở Việt Nam, LPG bắt đầu được sản xuất từ năm 2000 (tại nhà máy chế biến khí Phú Mỹ, tỉnh Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu) từ khí đồng hành mỏ Bạch Hổ (xt. Khí dầu mỏ); sản lượng LPG năm 2002 khoảng 300 nghìn tấn nhưng vẫn chưa đáp ứng kịp nhu cầu tăng với tốc độ rất nhanh của thị trường trong nước.
