Dimetyl ete là chất khí không màu, có mùi thanh tao nhẹ. Nó được vận chuyển dưới dạng khí hóa lỏng. Tiếp xúc với chất lỏng có thể gây tê cóng. Dimetyl ete dễ bị bắt lửa.
