Metylamin có dạng khí hoặc lỏng không màu, mùi tanh hắc giống mùi amoniac. Hơi nặng hơn không khí và có thể đọng lại ở những vùng trũng. Dễ dàng bắt cháy trong hầu hết các điều kiện. Được sử dụng để làm dược phẩm, thuốc diệt côn trùng, chất tẩy sơn, chất hoạt động bề mặt, hóa chất cao su. Mùi của metylamin thay đổi từ mùi tanh đến mùi amoniac khi nồng độ hơi tăng lên. Nó ăn mòn da và mắt. Ít đặc hơn nước; hơi nặng hơn không khí. Tạo ra các oxit nitơ độc hại trong quá trình đốt cháy.
