Nó có thể được điều chế bằng phản ứng chuyển vị giữa thiếc kim loại và đồng (II) sunfat: Sn (rắn) + CuSO4 (dung dịch) → Cu (rắn) + SnSO4 (dung dịch) Thiếc (II) sunfat là nguồn ion thiếc (II) tinh khiết, không bị nhiễm các loại thiếc (IV).
