Sulfuryl clorua là một chất lỏng không màu, có mùi hăng. Rất độc khi hít phải. Ăn mòn kim loại và mô. Lưu huỳnh là tứ diện trong SO2Cl2 và trạng thái oxy hóa của nguyên tử lưu huỳnh là +6, như trong axit sunfuric. Sulfuryl clorua không được tìm thấy trong tự nhiên, do quá trình thủy phân nhanh chóng của nó. Sulfuryl clorua thường bị nhầm lẫn với thionyl clorua, SOCl2. Tính chất của hai oxyclorua lưu huỳnh này khá khác nhau: sulfuryl clorua là nguồn clo trong khi thionyl clorua là nguồn ion clorua.
