Niacin có dạng bột kết tinh màu trắng không mùi, có vị chua yếu. pH (dung dịch nước bão hòa) 2.7. pH (dung dịch 1,3%) 3-3,5. Nó còn được gọi là axit nicotinic và vitamin B3, là một vitamin B thiết yếu, hòa tan trong nước, khi được sử dụng ở liều lượng cao, có hiệu quả trong việc giảm cholesterol lipoprotein tỷ trọng thấp (LDL) và tăng cholesterol lipoprotein tỷ trọng cao (HDL), làm tác nhân này có giá trị duy nhất trong điều trị rối loạn lipid máu. Niacin có thể gây tăng aminotransferase huyết thanh từ nhẹ đến trung bình và dùng liều cao và một số công thức nhất định của niacin có liên quan đến tổn thương gan cấp tính, rõ ràng về mặt lâm sàng, có thể nặng cũng như tử vong.
