Hexahydrat CrBr2 · 6H2O được điều chế bằng cách hòa tan crom trong axit bromhydric, rồi kết thúc lại. Hexahydrat rất nhạy cảm với không khí, dễ tan trong nước và cồn, không tan trong ete và aceton.
