Crom(II) clorua mô tả các hợp chất vô cơ có màu trắng khi tinh khiết, tuy nhiên trên thương mại thường có màu xám hoặc lục; hút ẩm và dễ hòa tan trong nước. CFC-113 hay 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethan là một chất lỏng không màu, có mùi ngọt như ete, chìm trong nước. Gặp nóng hoặc ngọn lửa sẽ phân hủy sinh ra các chất độc hại như hydro clorua, phosgene, hydro florua và cacbonyl florua. Việc phát hiện ra mùi đặc trưng cảnh báo sự hiện diện của các sản phẩm độc hại này. Phản ứng mạnh với kim loại dạng bột, tạo ra nguy cơ cháy nổ.
