Clo florua là khí không màu dễ bay hơi ở nhiệt độ phòng, khi làm lạnh đến -100 ℃ nó ở dạng lỏng có màu vàng nhạt. Clo florua phá hủy thủy tinh ngay lập tức, tấn công thạch anh dễ dàng khi có hơi ẩm; tiếp xúc với chất hữu cơ sẽ gây cháy. Nó là tác nhân oxy hóa mạnh.

CFC-113 hay 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethan là một chất lỏng không màu, có mùi ngọt như ete, chìm trong nước. Gặp nóng hoặc ngọn lửa sẽ phân hủy sinh ra các chất độc hại như hydro clorua, phosgene, hydro florua và cacbonyl florua. Việc phát hiện ra mùi đặc trưng cảnh báo sự hiện diện của các sản phẩm độc hại này. Phản ứng mạnh với kim loại dạng bột, tạo ra nguy cơ cháy nổ.
