Dimetyl ete là chất khí không màu, có mùi thanh tao nhẹ. Nó được vận chuyển dưới dạng khí hóa lỏng. Tiếp xúc với chất lỏng có thể gây tê cóng. Dimetyl ete dễ bị bắt lửa. Hơi của nó nặng hơn không khí. Trong điều kiện tiếp xúc lâu với lửa hoặc nhiệt độ cao, các thùng chứa có thể bị vỡ dữ dội và nổ tung.
