Dimetyl ete là chất khí không màu, có mùi thanh tao nhẹ. Nó được vận chuyển dưới dạng khí hóa lỏng. Tiếp xúc với chất lỏng có thể gây tê cóng. Dimetyl ete dễ bị bắt lửa. Hơi của nó nặng hơn không khí. Trong điều kiện tiếp xúc lâu với lửa hoặc nhiệt độ cao, các thùng chứa có thể bị vỡ dữ dội và nổ tung. Dimetyl ete lỏng là một hợp chất lỏng độc dễ bay hơi không màu được sử dụng làm dung môi, nhiên liệu, sol khí, chất đẩy và chất làm lạnh.
Dichloromethane là chất lỏng không màu, có mùi ngọt, giống như ete, không hòa trộn với nước,. Không cháy ở nhiệt độ phòng. Tiếp xúc với nhiệt độ cao có thể bay ra khói clorua độc hại. Dùng làm dung môi , tẩy sơn, và để loại bỏ caffein khỏi cà phê và trà. Diclomêtan lần đầu được nhà hóa học người Pháp Henri Victor Regnault tổng hợp năm 1839, cô lập nó từ hỗn hợp của clorometan và clo được phơi sáng.
