Dùng làm dung môi , tẩy sơn, và để loại bỏ caffein khỏi cà phê và trà. Diclomêtan lần đầu được nhà hóa học người Pháp Henri Victor Regnault tổng hợp năm 1839, cô lập nó từ hỗn hợp của clorometan và clo được phơi sáng.
