Barium bromide là tiền chất của hóa chất được sử dụng trong nhiếp ảnh và các bromide khác. Trong lịch sử, barium bromide được sử dụng để tinh chế radium trong quá trình kết tinh phân đoạn do Marie Curie nghĩ ra. Do kết tủa radium ưu tiên trong dung dịch bari bromua, nên tỷ lệ radium so với bari trong kết tủa sẽ cao hơn tỷ lệ trong dung dịch.
