Amoni dicromat là chất rắn kết tinh màu đỏ cam tươi. Nó dễ dàng bắt lửa và cháy tạo ra một lượng lớn cặn màu xanh lá cây. Nếu đun nóng trong thùng kín, thùng có thể bị vỡ do vật liệu bị phân hủy. Nó cũng có thể hoạt động như một chất oxy hóa mạnh nếu bị trộn lẫn hoặc bị ô nhiễm với vật liệu dễ cháy. Amoni dicromat được sử trong pháo hoa và trong những ngày đầu của ngành nhiếp ảnh cũng như in thạch bản...
Dùng làm nguyên liệu để điều chế butađien, isobutilen, xăng tổng hợp,... Hỗn hợp B với propan được dùng rộng rãi làm nhiên liệu; là thành phần chủ yếu của khí dầu mỏ hoá lỏng LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas). Ở Việt Nam, LPG bắt đầu được sản xuất từ năm 2000 (tại nhà máy chế biến khí Phú Mỹ, tỉnh Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu) từ khí đồng hành mỏ Bạch Hổ (xt. Khí dầu mỏ); sản lượng LPG năm 2002 khoảng 300 nghìn tấn nhưng vẫn chưa đáp ứng kịp nhu cầu tăng với tốc độ rất nhanh của thị trường trong nước.
