Tristearin được sử dụng là chất làm cứng trong sản xuất nến và xà phòng. Trong sản xuất xà phòng, tristearin được trộn với dung dịch sodium hydroxide trong nước. Phản ứng sau đây cho ra được glycerin và natri stearat, thành phần chính trong hầu hết xà phòng: C3H5 (C17H35O2) 3 + 3 NaOH → C3H5 (OH) 3 + 3 C17H35COONa Ngoài ra, tristearin còn tham gia phản ứng thủy phân và phản ứng cộng hidro của chất béo lỏng.
Natri metaborat là một muối natri vô cơ, có dạng tinh thể không màu, tan được trong nước, không tan trong ete, etanol. Nó được điều chế bằng cách kết hợp natri cacbonat và Bo oxit B2O3 hoặc borax Na2B4O7. Một cách khác để tạo ra hợp chất là phản ứng tổng hợp hàn the với natri hydroxit ở 700°C: B2O3 + 2 NaOH → 2 NaBO2 + H2O
